7 Shifts 24 Hour Hackathon

The solution...in just 24 hours!

The new feature that we designed for 7Shifts integrates a goal mapping tool into the 7Shifts dashboard, which is accessible to both employees and managers through a desktop and mobile platform. This tool provides helps restaurant workers map out their goals and accomplishments while working with the restaurant, so they can feel good about their work. The tool would be mutually beneficial to both employees and managers, as it allows employees to better engage with their workplace and coworkers, and allows managers to better communicate and check-in with their employees.

Project Kick-Off

To help the team stay aligned on key roles, responsibilities, deliverables and timelines, I created a tentative project plan based on my previous experience working on cross-functional teams.

The schedule included development feature freezes at which point no further changes could be made to the functional design of the prototype, to ensure deliverables for the web developers stayed within a realistic scope.

The Client: 7 Shifts

7 Shifts integrates with dozens of leading POS, payroll and technologies to simplify the payroll process, scheduling and create future proof restaurants.

Their mission is to improve restaurant performance and free up time for managers so they can focus on their clients.

The Problem

The hospitality industry was one of the hardest hit after the 2020 pandemic greatly impacted the economy. Research conducted by our team of researchers found that the industry was experiencing record high turnover and disruption.

7 Shifts approached our team to help us discover a solution for hiring and retaining employees for restaurant owners and managers.

How might we help restaurant workers feel good about their workplace so they are more likely to stay?

The Proto-Persona

Due to time constraints, we were not able to conduct a fulsome amount of primary research, however we created a proto-persona based on our secondary research on the experiences and challenges of restaurant employees. Additionally, a few members of our team worked in the hospitality industry, and could offer their insights as well.

We knew the biggest design opportunity was in mitigating an employee's feeling of under-achievement and repetitiveness, so we sought design solutions in this regard.

The Solution

Our solution for 7 Shifts was to create a "goal-mapping" mobile app feature for restaurant employees. The goal mapping feature would be employee-directed, but managers can track and help employees achieve their goals through their own management dashboard.

Once we narrowed down the key features and design of this app, we quickly built out prototypes in Figma. After confirming with the team that there were no further concerns regarding the screen design or functionality, we created a high-fidelity prototype using the design system developed by 7 Shifts.

Results

We presented our prototypes to 7 Shifts after 24 hours of work and in front of a panel of judges. The feedback we received for our project was mostly positive, though some improvements could be made to the UI and utility of this feature, specifically on the desktop viewport.
